PhD Course - Electro Research Colloquium

The objective of this course is to provide a structured, recurring forum for PhD students to meet and exchange knowledge. By breaking the isolation between research groups, the course fosters an academic community and provides a dedicated space for the exchange of ideas, methods, and state-of-the-art research. It is designed to expose students to research directions outside or tangential to their specialization while promoting networking and collaboration across laboratories and departments.
Learning objectives:
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
- Independently curate and synthesize relevant scientific literature to prepare for scientific discourse.
- Critically discuss the contribution and relevance of diverse academic papers.
- Compare and evaluate research methods to determine their transferability across different scientific domains.
- Translate complex, domain-specific research concepts into accessible language for a diverse, cross-disciplinary audience
- Present research topics and mediate academic discussion within a peer group.
- Assess the strengths, limitations, and potential applications of various methodologies.
- Provide constructive peer review and feedback on academic papers and presentations.
- Contribute to the creation of a PhD student community by actively engaging in interdepartmental knowledge exchange and collaboration.
Contents:
The course content centers on broad, shared research themes that are not specific to a single research group. These themes overlap across a wide range of fields, including, but certainly not limited to: machine learning, signal processing, sensors, optimization, and embedded systems. The curriculum is participant-driven and built around regular (weekly/bi-weekly) subgroup meetings. Each session features a rotating mediator who selects a topic and delivers a short introductory presentation. Group members individually find, read, and present their findings from relevant literature to foster a guided group discussion. Additionally, the course provides a forum for constructive peer review, where students receive feedback on their presentations and, when relevant, on draft academic manuscripts.
