Translational neuroscience series: Migraine and Stroke

Enrolment guidelines


This is a specialised course. This means that 80% of the seats are reserved to PhD students enrolled at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH and 20% of the seats are reserved to PhD students from other Danish Universities/faculties (except CBS).

The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD Students from NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from NorDoc member faculties. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list.


Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. Explain the epidemiology, pathophysiology and symptomatology of migraine and stroke
2. Have insight into the clinical evidence of the pathophysiology of the disorders
3. Understand the best basic science & human models of the disorders including their strengths and weaknesses
4. Utilize the above knowledge to choose the best basic science & human models to ask and answer questions with relevance for the clinic
5. Understand advance translational neurosciences tools, methods & disease modelling.


Content
This is going to be an annual 2 days-course in translational neuroscience. Every year over a cycle of 5 years the theme changes. We will cover 1) Migraine and stroke, 2) Neuroinflammatory conditions, 3) neurodegenerative disease, 4) Epilepsy and brain tumors and 5) Psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders.

This year the theme will be headache and stroke. The content will be the following:
1. Presentation of patient (in-person if possible) and symptomatology (patient case)
2. Epidemiology of the disorder, including a presentation of a “classic” course of the disease (by interview of patient – if possible)
3. The pathophysiological findings in humans of the disorder (from a clinical standpoint)
4. Presentation of the (basic) science & clinical instruments available to model the disorder
a. Clinical direct studies
b. Human models (if possible)
c. Animal models
d. Cell culture
e. Computer modeling and other modeling not dependent on living organisms
5. Discussion of the core issues associated with the disease on a personal and social level as well on an economic and societal level.
6. Group work based on this discussion where key questions, that if solved, will be beneficial to the patient and/or society.
7. Group work/discussion about how these questions are best answered and what models to use.


Participants
Physicians carrying out basic science & clinical research in the clinic and PhD students doing basic neuroscience projects in translational neuroscience.

There will be room for 12 participants on the course.

Seats to PhD students from other Danish universities will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and according to the applicable rules. Applications from other participants will be considered after the last day of enrolment.

Note: All applicants are asked to submit invoice details in case of no-show, late cancellation or obligation to pay the course fee (typically non-PhD students). If you are a PhD student, your participation in the course must be in agreement with your principal supervisor.
