Cross-cultural (neuro)psychological assessment: Foundations, methods and applications

Dates and time: 26-28 August 2026 from 9:00 to 16:30

Academic Aim:
 - To understand how cultural contexts shape cognitive processes and neuropsychological theory
 - To understand the challenges of neuropsychological assessment in individuals with diverse cultural backgrounds
 - Identifying and mitigating cultural bias in commonly used assessment tools
 - Training in methodologies for adapting and validating tests across cultures. 

Target group: PhD students working in the field of psychology and associated fields. If places are available, participants with similar competency levels (e.g. clinical experience with cross-cultural assessment) can also participate in the PhD course.

Day 1: Foundations of Cross-Cultural Neuropsychology

09:00-09:30 - Welcome & Introduction

09:30-11:00 - Culture and Cognition - Historical and Theoretical Perspectives
Lecture exploring how cultural contexts shape cognitive processes and neuropsychological theory.

11:15-12:45 - Assessing Cultural Bias in Neuropsychological Tests
Workshop on identifying and mitigating cultural bias in commonly used assessments.

13:45-15:15 - Clinical Challenges in Multicultural Settings (maybe in smaller groups depending on interests: e.g: Dementia, ABI, Child psychology)
Case study roundtable discussing real-world examples of cross-cultural clinical practice.

15:30-16:30 – Keynote: TBA

18-19: Welcome reception and networking (Reffen)

 

Day 2: Tools, Methods, and Ethics

09:00-10:30 - Cross-Cultural Test Adaptation and Validation
Lecture on methodologies for adapting and validating tests across cultures.

10:45-12:15 - Using Ecological and Culturally Sensitive Tools
Workshop introducing tools designed for diverse populations.

13:15-14:45 - Ethical Dilemmas in Cross-Cultural Neuropsychology
Panel discussion on ethical considerations in multicultural assessment and treatment.

15:00-16:30 - Designing a Culturally Inclusive Assessment Protocol
Interactive workshop where participants co-create inclusive protocols.


Day 3: Applications and Future Directions

09:00-10:00 - Neuropsychology in Refugee and Migrant Populations
Lecture on neuropsychological needs and approaches for displaced populations.

10:15-11.00 - Interpreter mediated assessments: challenges and solutions

11.15-12.30 – ECLECTIC framework in practice
Workshop on broader perspectives related to cross-cultural neuropsychology beyond assessment

13:15-14:45 - Participant and expert Presentations
Research showcase featuring innovative work in cross-cultural neuropsychology.

15:00-16:30 - Building a Global Neuropsychology Network
Closing panel on international collaboration and future directions.

16:30-17:00 - Certificates & Farewell

ECTS: 2 ECTS for participation including preparation

Max. numbers of participants: 40

Course fee: The PhD programme in Psychology participates in Denmark’s national network for PhD courses. This course is free of charge for PhD students enrolled at one of the participating PhD schools (PhD students enrolled at a Danish University, except Copenhagen Business School). Other PhD students will be charged a course fee of DKK 1,200 per ECTS for participation in the course (PhD students enrolled at Copenhagen Business School or a University outside Denmark).
