HTAP Principles of Relational Database Systems

The Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design at Aalborg University

Relational Database Management Systems form the foundation of every larger software application, with requirements coming in various “flavors” usually resulting in a “Hybrid Transactional and Analytical Processing” (HTAP) model. The course will discuss the impact of HTAP requirements on specific architectural decisions. It will therefore cover an end-to-end perspective from open storage formats to specific extensions at the level of SQL as the de facto standard query language. The course will also cover typical concurrency models and deployment scenarios in the cloud. The course will consist of two logical parts. In the first part, different components and their interplay will be discussed on a conceptual level. In a second part, the course will provide a hands-on experience in implementing an HTAP scenario on top of a relational data system.
