DTU Department of Energy Conversion and Storage
Scientific presentations are important as a means of communicating results at international conferences and creating contacts within the scientific community. After successful completion of this course, the students will have a significant toolbox for producing scientific presentations that effectively communicate their scientific results/ideas. This is a hands-on course where you will have the opportunity to work on presenting your own PhD project and get inspired by the presentations given by your student peers. The course is recommended for PhD students both at the beginning and towards the end of their project.
Learning objectives:
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
- Create a scientific presentation that efficiently communicates scientific results to a wider audience with academic backgrounds
- Create effective slides that support the narrative of the presentation
- Explain the do’s and don’ts of making a scientific presentation
- Analyze and evaluate the scope and structure of a scientific presentation
- Capture the audience’s interest in their work and sustain the interest through the presentation
- Give and receive constructive feedback
- Assess when and how it is appropriate to use AI generated content on your slides
- Decide the appropriate amount of text and formulas on slides relative to graphical content
Contents:
This course introduces students to topics on how to make a scientific presentation for efficient communication of scientific results. This includes the preparation, refining and delivery of two scientific presentations focusing on a background study relevant to your PhD project as well as your PhD project itself, respectively. Additionally, students are introduced to proper formatting of presentation slides for general scientific communication, e.g. composition of figures and text The course moreover consists of feedback sessions where your peers and teachers will help refine the presentation. You will each prepare and individually present a presentation at each Friday session during the two weeks of the course. It is advised that the students have identified their own scientific background study to be used for the first presentation prior to starting the first day on the course. Presence the full day at both presentation sessions is mandatory for passing the course.
