The course aims to introduce newly started PhD students at the PhD School of DTU Management and provide them with tools that are useful and required for their PhD studies. The students will gain some of the necessary generic skills for completing the proposed research project during the course.
Learning objectives:
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
- Reflect on your own and other participants' research projects (project descriptions)
- Understand the framework of a PhD project in Denmark and at DTU
- Understand the framework of a PhD project in Denmark and at DTU
- Understand the basics of the Vancouver guidelines for authorship
- Reflect on your future career path
- Understand the role of data management in research design and be able to implement an appropriate data management plan
- Understand the basic principles of responsible conduct of research
- Reflect on challenges in the PhD student/supervisor relationship
Contents:
The following topics will be addressed: • The ministerial order and DTU’s rules for the PhD programme • Presentation and discussion of project descriptions • Competence and personal development • Management of own PhD project • Data Management and responsible conduct of research • Academic journals, ranking and impact. Discussing pros and cons for relevant journals, including experimenting with publishers’ journal finder tools. • Ethics in academic publishing and the Vancouver protocol • Issues related to literature search and publication
