PhD Courses in Denmark

Cardiometabolic Networking Summit 2025

Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at University of Copenhagen

Aim and content

Seats for this course are reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list.

The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee.

Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. Discuss the development and complications of cardiometabolic related diseases.
2. Explain complexity and interplay in cardiac metabolism.
3. Discuss topics on cardiometabolic genomics.
4. Combine theoretical and practical insights into novel aspects in cardiometabolic clinical pharmacology.
5. Understand comorbidity in pathology of different organs and cardiometabolic disease.

Content
The summit is designed to provide an extensive insight into several translational cardiometabolic aspects with presentations from 6 international experts, 24 leading Danish Cardiometabolic researchers and 40 Danish PhD and Postdoc fellows. Additionally, there will be plenty of networking opportunities.
Following topics will be covered:
- Inflammation in diabetes
- Biomarkers and inflammation
- Diet, inflammation, and cardiometabolic health
- Cardiometabolic disease and kidneys
- Cardiometabolic disease and brain
- Cardiometabolic disease and heart
- Inequity
- Future challenges in treatments of obesity and current drug status

This course also focuses on advanced methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches in cardiometabolic research, providing participants with insights into both clinical and experimental techniques. Key themes include cardiac imaging (CT, MRI, and echocardiography), innovative cardiac models (e.g., Langendorff and patch-clamping), cellular cardiology techniques (histology and assays), and metabolic animal models for diabetes detection. Participants will explore topics such as diagnosing and managing type 1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular complications, alongside cutting-edge technologies in monitoring and treating cardiometabolic diseases.
Through interactive case writing and group work, participants will address real-world clinical scenarios involving obesity-induced inflammation, insulin resistance, and cardiac diseases, fostering a deeper understanding of prevention, diagnostics, and novel treatment strategies. Led by experts in the field, this program is ideal for healthcare professionals, researchers, and students specializing in cardiometabolic health.

Participants
The course is designed for PhD students and postdocs working in the cardiovascular and metabolic research fields.
