Optical Communications Journal Club

DTU Department of Photonics Engineering

General course objectives:

To practice reading, critical evaluation, and scientific discussion of state-of-the art scientific journal articles. To obtain an overview of some of the currently most important research topics in the field of optical communications.

Learning objectives:

A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

  • Improve their skills in reading and assessment of scientific articles
  • Use litterature search to help understanding a scientific issue
  • Practice the oral presentation of a scientific topic
  • Practice the discussion and solution of scientific problems in cooperation with fellow students
  • Perform constructive criticism and review of a scientific presentation by fellow students
  • Identify the main challenges of today's optical communication systems
  • Obtain an overview of the main topics in modern research in optical communications
  • Relate the modern research in optical communication to one's own research topic

Contents:

The articles studied during the course will cover some of the hottest research topics in modern optical communications. The topics will include high-capacity and spectrally efficient data transmission in optical fibres, spatial multiplexing, silicon photonics, optical signal processing etc. (see keywords). A number of potential papers/topics will be presented at the beginning of the course.
