This four-session writing course is designed for PhD students who have reached the writing phase of their research project and have limited experience of academic writing in English. The course focuses on the fundamentals of academic writing, i.e., sentence length and structure (conciseness and simplicity), paragraph structure (unity and logical development), cohesion (flow), vocabulary (precision and collocations) and the most common errors (e.g., punctuation). We will also look at different ways of expressing your voice as an academic writer, for example, by choosing a certain citation pattern or inserting evaluative words and phrases to position yourself in relation to your own and other scholars’ research. The overall aim of the course is to make your own writing clearer, more readable and thus more persuasive.

You will be expected to submit four short texts during the course of the semester. The texts will be returned to you with written (electronic) feedback, and you will also have access to oral feedback from the instructor towards the end of each session. This feedback will help you improve your writing by raising your awareness of academic writing conventions and common pitfalls for non-native writers.

The course will consist of a mixture of teacher explanations, participant input, discussions and exercises. It will provide you with practical tools, tips and strategies to make you better able to critically evaluate and revise your own writing.

The course consists of 4 sessions (of 3 x 45-minutes) held two to three weeks apart to allow you to work on your own text. The course also includes 30 minutes of feedback per participant.

Testimonials

I really enjoyed the course. I've got so many tools which I can use in my continuous academic life.

The course was overall fantastic. It was full of essential information and advice delivered in an accessible way. The PowerPoints were well structured and could be re-read easily at home. I have attended other writing courses. This was by far the best.
