Teaching technique for PhD students

Objective
This course introduces PhD students to tools and techniques that will help them plan and carry out their teaching at the university. PhD students will also be introduced to basic pedagogical terms, specific teaching methods and -activities, which also inspires to reflection on ones own practice.
Learning outcome
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- explain and use basic concepts about learning
- plan a course module or a lesson where the intended learning outcomes and forms of teaching and examination are aligned, and where basic learning concepts are taken into consideration
- use various techniques to engage students in and between lessons
Content
The course contains a short introduction to factors that are crucial for learning. Participants will work with alignment between content, intended learning outcomes, and forms of teaching and examination. The course also focuses on tools, techniques and activities that engage students both in- and out of class.
Working methods and preparation
Working methods
The course is organized so that the participants gain insight into and experience with university teaching via exercises, examples, and peer feedback.
Active participation
The course is based on active participation, where the participants work with their own teaching practice.
Preparation
Participants are expected to prepare before each course day. The total workload of the preparation amounts to 20 hours. The course page on Brightspace will open two weeks prior to the first workshop day. On there participants can find instructions for the preparatory work.
Conditions
Preparation is mandatory, meaning that participation in the workshops days will not be possible if the preparation is not completed. Participation in both workshops are prerequisite for getting a course certificate.
The course consists of two workshop days with physical attendance of 10 hours in total + 20 hours of preparation.
The workshops will take place at Campus Aarhus.
